Fast-track Everglades restoration before it’s too late for our fisheries!
We have all heard about the plan to discharge water from Lake Okeechobee into Florida Bay. The result of those discharges into the St.Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon have devastated those eco-systems, harmed the fisheries and created negative economic impact.
The water is also being pumped through the Caloosahatchee River and estuary system into Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor on the west coast.
We are concerned these discharges will further compound the negative effects to our neighboring fisheries, spread further into Florida Bay and into the Florida Keys. Our legislators need to be made aware the importance of water quality to the south Florida economy.
If you need to know more about this complicated issue, read about the Everglades Restoration Plan. If you want to learn more about the effects of the discharge on our neighboring fisheries, read and sign this petition.
Most importantly, contact your elected officials and tell them to fast-track CERP, purchase the land to create reservoirs to store and clean freshwater, and implement strategies to reduce nutrients and contaminants in the freshwater entering the estuaries.
