Despite what seems to be a flurry of oarfish sightings this year, the events are still very rare. This most recent encounter was even more unique as the giant, freaky fish from the deep were still alive and swimming in the shallows. They did eventually beach themselves and die, which is the normal scenario for most oarfish that are found.
Kayaking tourists from Shedd Adventures and Un-Cruise Adventrues were exploring the pristine waters of Baja, Mexico when they came upon not one, but a pair of floundering oarfish. They looked longer than the kayaks and even got some amazing underwater footage of the creatures as they swam about the shallows. The oarfish were about 15 feet long and can grow to over 40 feet.
Normally found in deep water of up to 3000 feet, the oarfish is normally only seen by humans when it is dying and comes to the surface or beach. Video was taken by deep sea rover vehicles a few times in the past, but this could be very rare video of a live, if barely, oarfish swimming in the shallows.
