Governor: Stop gill-netting Wild Hawaiian Bonefish! Posted on May 30, 2012July 13, 2017 Designate Hawaiian Bonefish, O’io, as a “gamefish.” Hawaiian Bonefish are extremely susceptible to mono-filament gill nets and are being harvested at an alarming rate. These highly regarded sport fish are sold in local markets for pennies a pound to benefit a few individuals at the expense of the rest of our community. “Gamefish” status would ban the sale of Bonefish but still allow catch and keep by rod and reel for personal consumption- protecting this valuable community resource from continued over fishing.
