With the impact of ExxonMobile’s Yellowstone Oil Spill still unknown, you can’t help but wonder, who the hell is keeping Big Oil in check? And is Big Oil only as transparent as the oil they spill?
This 42,000 gallon leak, which began early Saturday morning, is also being fueled by “flood stage” waters that surround Yellowstone National Park. This leak, which began in Billings, is reported to have already affected areas like Hysham, nearly 100 away from the spill according to EPA spokeswoman Sonya Pennock.
Another EPA official speculated that a very small portion has been cleaned up thus far, while Exxon has thrown 350 workers on site to try and corral this issue. What is most concerning however, is the vacuity of most reports, and what has really been affected. Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, who got a look at the spill today, was critical of the comprehensiveness and swiftness of Exxon’s response.
