First of all, fly fishing is magical. You don’t even have to catch a trout to really have a great day fly fishing, although a tug or two on your line certainly helps. When fly fishing, you are usually on a beautiful mountain stream with nature all around you. Often, while fly fishing, I will see ospreys, kingfishers, herons, minks, otters and beavers. Except for the beavers, we are all after the same prey, except the others all eat theirs; I release mine. Most fly fishers are catch and release followers, but you can keep one or two to eat if that is your goal.
If, when you think of fishing, you think of sitting on a bank, or in a boat, with the sun beating down and a worm in your hand, then you are not thinking of fly fishing. In fly fishing, the bait is always artificial, small and light, and the setting is often in a small stream with the sweet sound of gurgling water. Cool, calm and relaxing. When you catch a trout, the fly is always in the lip of the fish, never swallowed like in bait fishing. That alone is magic.
