ISSUE 22 IS LIVE!

issue22In this issue of This is Fly we rip through the backcountry of the Rockies with Chris Andlein and go deep in the frozen land of Austria with Christof Menz. Too cold for you? Why not catch some big waves and bones with Coach Duff in Hawaii. Have you ever seen a freight train with graffiti on it while wading a stream? The Blue Ridge Angler is obsessed with capturing these rolling canvases and shares with us some of the history behind these marked cars. Vampires on the prowl? Take to the flats with Paris and challenge your fears. If you want to sink your fangs into some fresh tuna, Charles Clover of The End of The Line will make you think twice. Don’t forget to take in the art of Collin Von Der Sluijs and plan your next trip to land 24-lb Peacock bass all while jamming to Kashmir by Led Zeppelin.

NO NETS IN BAHAMAS

bahamasThe Government of The Bahamas is not minded to permit the use of purse seine or net fishing within the waters of The Bahamas.

This method of fishing could result in the possible depletion or signification reduction of the fishing stocks in Bahamian waters. Having regard to the importance of sportfishing to the Tourism Industry, the Government takes the position that purse seine or net fishing will not be permitted in The Bahamas. REVIEW: RIO LT SERIES TROUT LINE

rioWhat could be more pleasing to hardcore trout-heads than the softest of presentations? RIO’s newly released Trout LT (stands for “light”) lines allow you to make up close and mid-range presentations with style. All the tech is there, super-slickness, hi-flotation, welded loops (on WFs) and individually designed tapers make these the go-to lines when you’re expecting to fish quiet, cool waters.

The packaging states ‘perfect for fishing dries, soft hackles, emergers, small nymphs and chironomids’ – so take that LT designation seriously and prepare an alternate spool in case you have to switch to streamers or weighted bugs during the day. Granted, you could add a little more power to that cast, but then you’d be sacrificing some of that aforementioned style – which is what these lines are all about. Taper recipes are brewed up just right: heads are light, but not too light – and they’re designed long, so roll casting/mending both DT and WF models is a snap. The DT in particular will impress even the most demanding traditionalists. Too many obstructions for a proper backcast? No problem – LTs roll out to 40 feet with ease. Unless you’ve been targeting large species exclusively, getting used to the LT series takes minutes, and once you do, you’ll want to fish these lines all day long. Took someone at RIO to finally figure out that day-glo yellow isn’t the only yellow that exists: the LTs come in sedate colors – something to be thankful for. LTs are among the most supple lines available, featuring coatings that were developed for coldwater use, so you’ll feel a slight decrease in performance the moment temps start to creep upward. When RIO says ‘trout’ – they mean it.

Final note: LTs perform beautifully on both traditional, softer fly rods as well as new school models with more zip.

Lines tested: #4 DT, #5 WF

LAWSUIT FILED TO STOP GILL NETTING

turtleTOPSAIL ISLAND, N.C. – The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center has filed a lawsuit in federal court asking the State of North Carolina to stop authorizing gill net fishing in violation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The lawsuit cites studies by the National Marine Fisheries Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the North Carolina Department of Marine Fisheries that have found gill net fishing in North Carolina waters results in the injury and death of sea turtles protected by the ESA. The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

A BIG STEP FOR THE BLUEFIN TUNA

tunaThe European Commission is proposing a ban on commercial bluefin tuna fishing to save the fish from possible extinction, but several countries, one being Japan, strongly oppose the move. France is in favor of the ban but for a limited time only. Bluefin tuna stocks have dropped 80 per cent in the last few decades.
