Not long after I took up flyfishing. These days I strive to combine my three passion; traveling, photography and fly fishing. I’ve been lucky to fish and photograph a range of beautiful destinations varying from Scandinavia to far-flung destinations in the Caribbean and beyond.

I love to capture that perfect moment or detail, be it a certain feel, the way the light hits a landscape, the joy of an angler when he lands the fish of lifetime or simply a colorful fin. Using my camera, I notice things that you might otherwise miss. Photography has become as big a passion for me as flyfishing itself – I like how you never stop learning.
Recently, I’ve started taking advantage of the newest generation DSLR’s ability to shoot very high quality video. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities that I’ve thrown myself into. An exciting film project in a destination far off the beaten track is in the works, so watch this space!

Jan’s photography and writings have been published in a number of magazines and catalogs around the world, including Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, Scott Fly Rod Co. catalogs, and Catch Magazine.
I moved out west around 10 years ago from the Upper West side of Manhattan. My first summer here I decided rather than settle down too quickly that I would head up to Homer, Alaska and fish my way back to Anchorage. It was the first time I realized the need for something bigger than a 6 wt rod.
After catching my breath I returned to Portland only to jump at the chance to meet my brother in Idaho and fish the Lochsa River & Kelly Creek for some surrealistic dry fly cutthroat fishing..

When I returned to Portland I don’t recall the actual moment when my fly fishing & photography hit head on but I knew when it did I was a goner.

Once I got into the rhythms of living in the NW I soon realized this was the place for me. I thought “Where else can you can get up in the morning and slam a fine cup of Stumptown coffee ,go steelhead fishing for a few hours, run home and put a couple of local micro-brewed beers in the drift boat and spend the rest of the evening casting big dries on a fly fishing only lake at dusk during a prolific hex hatch in the summer?”

My photography and fly fishing have become a big part who I am. The marriage of my two passions has allowed me to meet so many genuinely talented fly fishing photographers, artists and fly tiers who have also found their own slice of what it is about fly fishing that makes people become absorbed by its culture.

As much as I shoot color images my true love is black and white. I am always looking for a shot that will work as a tonal image and tell a story of the simple nuances of fly fishing.

My favorite quote is by the late Harry Middleton from his classic book The Earth is Enough As told in the story by Uncle Albert “Perhaps I should just lease a place in heaven in case there no decent trout water there”…

Rich’s photography is currently being shown at the River Run Lodge along the Deschutes River and on his website www.eastforkfly.com

I grew up in New England and, ironically, I didn’t fish much as a kid, other than throwing plugs off the beach to Bluefish in Truro while on family camping trips. After college in Boston, I spent some time ski bumming in Utah, and decided to move to NYC to try my hand as an actor. I always loved imagery as a way to communicate a story or feeling and thought that film work might be my niche. Coupled with a complete lack of talent and no desire to sit around a craft service table (the film-set food table) for 16 hours a day, I realized that acting was not gonna be it. After a camping trip to Yellowstone Park in the early 90s with my wife-to-be, I was first exposed to Fly-Fishing during a hike-in overnight on Grebe Lake one August. I only wish I brought a good camera with me on that trip, as I will never forget the sight of a fly-man in a belly boat, on a glassy lake, with snow falling, fog rising and hundreds of trout (and Grayling) gulping at Callibaetis as the sun started to rise. I was transfixed as if I had just seen my first naked lady.

To me, imagery and fishing are one in the same. As much as I want to catch any given fish (and believe me I do), I just as strongly want to capture the moment of the scene, the take and the struggle on film. To me, I want to get all the variables correctly; either with the light and the camera, or with the flyrod and fly. This is where the satisfaction comes from. Not for any goal-reaching or desire to control things around me, but just to feel things come together. I am generally terrible at this in real life. The effort to balance my love for my children, the challenge of living in NYC, the struggle of earning enough dough is often overwhelming to me. But with photography and fishing, every once in a blue moon, I get it right, and it teaches me about life and gives me a glimpse of the satisfaction of a life in balance. A deep, shit-eating grin that comes all the way up from my shin bones.

Luckily, I live in NYC and only 12 miles away from my boat. I have been really really lucky to fish in Panama quite a bit, most of the Bahamas, Alaska, Belize, Seychelles, a lot of the West, Mexico a bunch, Florida, Louisiana, etc. I am fortunate to run the Redbone Tournament (a cystic fibrosis charity event) every fall in Montauk. And I would really like to fish and shoot Tarpon as they have been mostly elusive to me up until now.

So that’s about it. I fish what was once 170 days a year as a guide (kids and the economy are cutting a few dozen days off that the last few years), I shoot actors portraits, some magazine stuff, sell some real estate, tend bar, whatever can pay the bills. I try to keep up the fight to protect the resource, especially the Striped Bass (go to www.joinFCA.org if you want to help). Most importantly, I feel fortunate to have met and know a lot great people that happen to be fisherman.

In the back of my mind I always have two things. My kids, first and foremost, and second, the sight of some fish (most likely Bluefin Tuna though) busting all over the surface of the water. Somehow I don’t think that that will ever change….

The next is, well, nothing. I can’t ever think of anything witty to say about myself and I’m not comfortable talking myself up. I’m just a guy who likes to fish and shoot photos. Like everyone else, I live out of a backpack, fish over a hundred day’s year while bouncing from water to water living off peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – and Red Bulls.

To me, fishing, and photography, is about many things, right now in my life it’s about the inspiration of the unknown. The size of fish, usually, isn’t the target, but a foreign destination is. Sometimes my friends and I pack up for a few days, open the map, point and head out. Some of the most memorable adventures happened this way. My photography is somewhat similar, it’s all pretty random. I’m sure, just like fishing, it will evolve and change course over time. I’m very much OK with that, I have a lifetime to enjoy the attempts and fails of having fun, why rush it.

I had a fantastic year chasing fins while traveling with my friends. I was lucky enough to see a few new places and visit some old welcoming waters. Lately I’ve been trudging through the snow and enjoying a quiet winter. After a busy year, it’s nice to get back home and recharge. The near future is still uncertain. I have a few projects under construction, which I hoping work out. Regardless, I’m excited about the upcoming season and its endless possibilities.

It wasn’t always that way, though, which gives me a unique appreciation for my lifestyle. For five years I worked in the Information Technology field as a network administrator and security analyst, riding a wave of working for a year and taking six months off to travel and fish around the world. It didn’t take too long to figure out the corporate office was not for me, and I took the dot com crash as my queue to pursue other paths in life. It’s been a long, bumpy road, but I wouldn’t trade anything in the world for the places I’ve gone, the people I’ve met, nor the experiences I’ve had.
These days I spend a lot more time on the water with a camera in my hand than I do with a fly rod. During the past couple years I’ve guided a couple of seasons at a helicopter fishing lodge in Alaska, guided in the Great Lakes, taken countless trips across the Pacific Northwest for trout and steelhead, spent a month exploring in the Bahamas, and taken a couple of two-month trips to Patagonia. I supplement my income by writing the occasional magazine article, selling stock photographs, doing freelance video projects (such as filming promotional pieces), and arranging and hosting custom fishing adventures to some of the world’s top angling destinations. I’m always in the process of planning my next project and adventure!

Life as an adventure filmmaker, photographer and fly fishing guide is certainly not all guts and glory. Don’t get me wrong, at times it’s the best job on Earth, but… Health insurance? Yeah right! Life is in constant flux somewhere between having a huge wad of cash in your pocket after a guiding season to being broke before the next one. Then there’s the elements; as much as I don’t miss a cubicle, when it’s 15 degrees blowing freezing rain sideways, I must admit there is some sort of primal longing for a warmer working environment. And sure it gets old crashing on couches, living out of duffel bags and having to constantly explain my nomadic existence to complete strangers, but what the heck? It’s a living, right?
An excerpt from the new book Ryan is not working on called “Fish, Beer, and A Lifetime of Mistakes”

“It was 3 o’clock in the morning, barely above twenty degrees, and the entire boat was covered in a half inch of ice. We had been fishing for almost ten hours for one bite, and I stopped being able to feel my toes hours ago. I looked at my 53 year old father and said, “There’s a very thin line between hardcore and stupid!” Without missing a beat he said, “When you find it, let me know!”

My dad is an avid fisherman and by virtue of being fairly well off he travels the world to pursue his hobby. By virtue of being his only offspring he brings me along from time to time to some amazing locations. Mainly the pacific northwest and Alaska. We’ve been to kodiak, southeast Alaska. And all over the kenai peninsula in pursuit of king salmon silver salmon and halibut. Good times.

Until recently I have been shooting all the online apparel catalogs for Kidrobot but as you know times are tuff and they scaled back big time. So basically I’ve been struggling to even find assisting work. 2010 is gonna be all about putting myself out there and trying to promote my personal projects.
Inspired by photographer legends like Adams and Rowell, Barker captures dramatic imagery with a style and uniqueness all his own.

Obsessed with golden light and unforgettable vistas, his landscapes have sold as limited edition fine art prints to private and corporate collectors throughout the United States. His love affair with exceptional imagery has translated into stirring editorial work in skiing, fly fishing and numerous other lifestyle and adventure publications. In addition, Barker is also frequently sought after by commercial clients seeking imagery that conveys a strong sense of place, product and lifestyle.
This past year has been extremely kind to me as I’ve enjoyed a plethora (+10 pts. for Three Amigos reference) of published work. I’m looking forward to exploring new water this summer, and continuing to tell the fly fisherman’s tale through imagery that can’t be overlooked. It’s a rare blessing to find a combination that works as well as fly fishing and photography. We participate in a visually enticing sport, taking place in some of the most stunning locations on the planet. There may or may not be a trip in the works to the Southern Hemishpere, and Steelies in BC. For those interested in bettering their photography, I have an instructional DVD being released in February featuring footage from a fall morning shoot on the Middle Provo River. Additionally, I’ll have some exciting news posted on my blog soon about upcoming virtual workshops. Stay tuned!

I was born in the sovereign nation of Texas, but have lived most of my 27 years in the outdoor playground known as Georgia. I’m married to a great girl named Stephanie who has always encouraged me to pursue what I love, which is what led me to start writing professionally about four years ago. About two years ago, I purchased my first camera, a Nikon D80. A good friend told me to shoot fully manual from the get-go so that I would quickly learn what makes a good photograph and I’ve been addicted ever since.
My first book, Fly Fishing Georgia: A No Nonsense Guide to Top Waters, just came out in October and is a look at my state’s best cold-, warm- and saltwater fisheries. While it’s a guide book, it’s also worthy of the coffee table thanks to the help of my good friend and awesome photographer, Chad McClure, who contributed a majority of the 130-plus color photographs.

Because people always have to list who’s published them so they seem credible, I guess I should mention that I’ve had either words, photographs or both published in American Angler, Catch Magazine, Georgia Sportsman, Georgia Outdoor News and Alabama Outdoor News. In my day-to-day, I also shoot photos and write the outdoor column for the Athens Banner-Herald in Athens, Georgia, and shoot photos for Athens Magazine and Skirt! Athens, which is a ladies’ magazine (how’s that for versatility?). I also shoot family portrait- and product shots and photograph real estate.

Focusing so much of my time and effort on attempting to document our native trout species in their natural environment is a labor of love for me. I could say I got the idea while observing a school of hundreds of brook trout and Klamath rainbows hovering over an aquamarine seep amongst the lava rocks of the headwaters of the Williamson in Oregon’s high dessert. Or maybe it came to me while scouting waterfalls deep in the Wilderness of the Purcells and seeing fifteen pound bull trout scurry off their gravel bar redds and attempting to eat sixteen inch long Westslope Cutties. In reality it has been a lifelong connection with the natural world which I have fostered through activities as diverse as ski touring in Alaska to kayaking remote creeks on the Olympic Peninsula. These photos are my way of sharing the stunning circle of life that all of us are part of.

While equipment and techniques used vary according to location, one thing that always rings true is that it takes a confluence of events for me to capture an image that will make an impact. Rivers are the most dynamic environment on earth and our native fish species are constantly adjusting to this dynamism. The first hard frost of the year sees me pouring over google earth, searching for potential freshwater seeps in the most remote corners of Yellowstone’s deadfall-infested marshes, where I know brilliantly colored brookies will be staging for their spawn. Just after the first heavy snow in the high country, when the Cottonwoods are a deep yellow, finds me stumbling over barb wire fences in search of a plug of hook nose browns charging headlong out of a reservoir for their fall ritual. Finding these spots during these moments is the key to having a chance to get that shot.

My goal is not a photo documenting something. It is to create an image that stands as a piece of fine art as well as doing the location and species justice. Marrying the perfection of a red bellied Westslope Cutthroat to the kaleidoscope glacial scree bottom of a gin clear Glacier Park creek takes all the pieces to fall into place. Only when all the stars align do these places give up that image that exists in my mind. My main focus with photography has been the fine art side of the business and I have found printing my images on canvas enhances their beauty. I enjoy displaying my artwork at galleries and outdoor fine art festivals throughout the west.

The wilderness has been more than a place for me to find a challenge, it is a place to reconnect with a natural world that modern life too often pulls us away from. While it seems like just yesterday that I was standing on a street corner selling three dollar greeting cards from my first point and shoot, in reality it has been a long journey that I would never trade for anything. It has only been through the support of friends and family that I have traveled through this difficult learning curve and continue to be able to pursue my passions. I hope you enjoy these moments I have captured and share them with your friends.
